Rio Conventions

DEFINITION
Youth4Capacity and Climate Words

The Rio Conventions are three international treaties that were established at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

The conventions include the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The Rio Conventions are colloquially known as the ‘three sisters’ as they share objectives in their goal to tackle the interconnected challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation.

The UNFCCC aims to stabilise atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations at a safe level, the CBD to conserve biodiversity and the UNCCD seeks to combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought.
